Should Jerry Jones Step Down as GM of the Dallas Cowboys?

Posted by firethecowboysgm on January 25, 2009 at 4:47 PM

As the owner of the site, I've been given some constructive feedback by a True Dallas Cowboys Fan that does not agree with the ideas of this site.  He has criticized that we do not give an opportunity for people to voice their opposing views.  This site is for all Cowboys Fans, whether they agree with the message of the site or not.  This Blog is being started for SuperStarCowboys and the fans that think Jerry Jones should stay on as GM.  Hopefully, we can have some constructive debate!  Keep it clean, but argue all you want!

This is why I love comments sections on blogs, because whether anyone wants me to post my opinion or not doesn't matter. It's a rather dumb argument to say no opportunity is given ...

I found this site and was curious because of the domain name, checked it out and I didn't really feel that signing the petition was right for me, not at first. I kept reading and writing my own blogs at www.CowboysNation.net.

I realized then that whether or not he will actually fire himself as GM, or even give a second look at anything coming from this site, didn't matter. I doesn't matter because Jerry Jones will do exactly what Jerry Jones wants to do.

I've told #1Cowboys Fan already that hitting JJ's wallet is how to get a change to happen, and a change is all that is asked. Nobody can say that he hasn't caused as many problems as he has caused success in Dallas, and for that he is a great Owner. As GM though, something needs to change.

A GM needs to support the coaching staff in dealing with players, when a GM stop supporting his head coach is when the head coach gets fired, most times around the league. Look at Tampa for more details on that.

Honestly, I'd like to see everyone supporting this website, and many many more, that have season tickets for next season, pick a game or two at home where none of them show up. Leave a big hole in the stands that the national media sees, make Jerry talk about that after the game and on the radio.

A fan on the DMN blog said that we own the Cowboys by paying for the tickets, and it's true. If we don't pay, the team falls apart financially. So let's show the GM that we want a change, that we aren't happy about the performance our massively talented team put up this year. It's a fair request, but getting JJ to listen takes a site like this, if he will ever listen at all.

Not saying I agree with "fire the GM" exactly, but something needs to change in Dallas, and the change does start at the top.

Honestly, my whole thing on this is that no matter how many ideas and sites we can come up with, In my heart of hearts I don't belive anything from us the fans will be enough to actually cause JJ to take an action to give up a position that he'd rather die than surrender. I think it's great that this site for example is making the effort, I think it's a great idea and it helps us Cowboys fans come together but at the end of the day... I think the only way Jerry Jones would step down as GM is if someone from the inside had a talk with him about it. Forrrrrr Example, Jerry's son and daughter work for the Cowboys I believe!! Remember a couple weeks ago, that report came out that Stephen Jones (JJ's son) was going to sit and have a talk with Dad about getting rid of T.O. Well, if Stephen can try and get Dad to budge on something like that, then Stephen needs to say "Hey Dad, don't you think maybe you've been working a little too hard, and maybe it's time to bring an actual GM in here? Someone who can lighten the load on you and bring in a strong new attitude around here?" People like Jerry Jones, you gotta lay them down gently or they might get their feelings hurt or whatever. I agree with BT that He's a great owner tho. And about the not showing up for the games..I'll be honest, I know I couldn't go through with that. Plus, it'd be like we're turning our backs on the Cowboys... the 'Boys on the field. I'm all for ramming heads with JJ but I couldn't leave the Cowboys with holes in the stands. I see where you're coming from BT and I understand the logic, I do. I'm just saying I personally wouldn't do it.

Im not sure what way I want to go with this. I havent signed yet only because I keep asking my self the question, was Jerry not the GM when we won 3 Super Bowls? Hes proven he can be a great GM and hes proven he can be a bad GM. I think ill wait to see what role Dan Reeves has, if he joins us, before i sign this. Good job on the site im just not sure I want to sign...yet.

Dustin ... It's pretty well known that those three Super Bowls in the 90's were achieved without a heavily involved GM. Jimmy Johnson ran his own team just as Switzer did, though Johnson did a lot more than Switzer. That's why it's so significant that it's been 12 years since we've won a playoff game. It's been 13 years now without Switzer and most people attribute that following year after he left to things that he had done while he was still there.

Jones has yet to prove he can be a good GM simply because he hasn't done it without one of those two very demanding, strong minded, and aggressive coaches.

Anyone with the balls to tell the ringmaster the truth, "leaves" the circus.

Dan Reeves "hey Jerry thanks for letting me get back into football, but you know you will have to get rid of TO if you want to win the superbowl and couple of other of the guys you overpaid for and your QB probably will never be as good you hoped, oh and Wade is a lame duck coach but I am sure I can help"

This is ridiculous!!! Bottom line is that Jerry has made several moves (maybe ultimately every move) to increase his bottom line. When JJ bought the team he said he wanted it to be his main business, his moneymaker, and people branded him a fool for that, saying an NFL team was a financial liability. Well, he has proven them wrong there--after all, he is a businessman, which is what enabled him to buy the team in the first place. Most of his success with the Cowboys has been just that, business success. That new stadium is a business venture, not a football venture. A football man would never have planned and built such a circus monstrosity.

Jerry Jones is not a football man.

He cannot, has not built a football team.

The past twelve years has been proof of that over and over.

He does not properly value good coaching.

He does not properly value team chemistry.

He does not allow his stars to be open to competition from players below them.

We will not see another championship until Jerry is in a pine box.

End of story.

Bizriak ... well said. I do disagree with the notion that he will have to either die or sell the team in order for them to win another championship. Football is more of a year by year thing when it comes to success than business is, and that's why he's allowed this to go on for so long. He will, at some point, see that he is the common link, that he is the only other consistency than losing. I just hope it's soon .... 12 years is long enough.

I feel like you do. I have been a Cowboy fan for long time and I for one like to see some changes. I believe that the Cowboys will go to the super bowl in 2009 season. I have a lot of faith in them. We really need some team players that can really perform well under pressure. We need a real and true leader that sets by example. Now that is a real and true leader.

SBV although I share your sentiment and hope a superbowl appearance is coming soon. Where are these team players coming from?
Jerry Jones has stated publically that he thinks this team is very close to being a championship squad. So why would he go and out and do something he hasn't in his tenure as GM (except during the Parcells years) and that is build a squad of team players not stars.

The last two posters are delusional.

The Cowboys are going nowhere, and it's a shame that some good players like DWare will never hoist a trophy, and instead will be lined up in history with great players who never won squat.

Jerry Jones has made the Cowboys a pathetic sideshow.

I would love to be wrong, but he has had twenty years now to prove he's a football man.

It's past time for him to pass the baton to someone else, but we al know that won't happen.

Bizriak - is it delusional to "hope" for a championship, maybe but as a fan what else am I supposed to do, even Lions fans have hope right now.
If rookie QBs on teams with less than 6 wins the previous year can make the playoffs and a 9-7 team (that needed over-time to beat these Cowboys) can play in a SB then anything is possible.

Is Jerry jones going to biuld a franchise that is in contention every or at least most years like say the patriots or Steelers, NO, the last 12 years have proved that.

Of course it's not delusional to hope--if it was then I wouldn't even bother with sports period. A delusion is a belief in something that is obviously not true--no sane person could think it to be so. For anyone to think that the Cowboys are right on the cusp the way things are now, with Jerry as GM and the current coaching regime in place, is delusional. They don't have what it takes. It doesn't matter how much football talent they have, they won't win anything. Jerry has tried to run things through other coaches, he has tried letting go of the reigns and letting a big name coach run things (sort of), he has tried drafting, he has tried going with assistant coaches from successful teams--JERRY JONES IS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR.

Actually, he is getting what his heart truly desires--he makes a mint off of the Cowboys. He has by far one of, if not the most profitable teams in the world. He is able to partially pay for the ridiculous new stadium.

I've said enough for the moment--the point is I will still root for the Cowboys, and if I'm wrong I'll be the first to congratulate JJ, but unfortunately I don't think I am.

Well the only thing I can say being a Cowboy fan is that Jerry is living in the shadow of JIMMY!!! He was the last True GM we had and Head Coach ever since the days of Tex Schram and Tom Landry!! " and we know what they did " OK back to this blog thang... We all know what needs to be done and that is for Jerry to step out the face book of trying to be like Jimmy cause he has failed for the past 12 seasons as a wana be head coach and well you know the wana be GM. I have to agree with " biziak " Jerry is always and will continue to always be the head coach even with a coach in place.. oh let me stratch that a PUPETT!!!! And we all know he would have fired may be atleast 4 GM's cause of what has happened in the past 12 years. Man listen to that 12 years, that sucks big time. You need to do all the fans you have out all across the world a favor and step down as GM. Your making the Cowboys a Circus Act more then America's Team.

Well let me say this last part here cause this should sum up why Jerry should step down and hire a true GM. As long as you keep making this team a circus act like I said already and we as Cowboy Fans don't see it getting any better and the rings never come.." since your ego wont let you step down " you will start losing more and more fans . What does that mean, well your money will not be there like it used to be and we all know you being a good business man wont like that. So just make that right call FOR US FANS AND FOR THE LOVE OF OUR COWBOYS !!!

true blue for life.. " i hope "

Okay....I've been reading over alot of posts and I can literally feel everyone's frustration coming to life off the screen!!! And I agree with it However....some of you are acting like the Cowboys are DOOMED forever and will not go anyyyywhere at all. I too agree that Jerry should step down However.....you're Blaming Jerry for 100% of what goes wrong with the Boys and it's just not so.

Let's look at the 2007 season: 13-3 #1 seed NFC. - We had a AWESOME team! our Offense was deadly, defense was gettin the job done, we WERE the best team in the NFL that year the ONLY reason we didn't continue is cause we let the Giants get away..... Think about it people 3 plays: If Tony Romo doesn't overthrow T.O. when we was open in the endzone - Touchdown...... If Patrick Crayton hadn't DROPPED that pass over the middle to set up a HUGE 1st down - game changer. If Patrick Crayton hadn't slowed down on that route to the endzone, The Ball was coming right for him - Touchdown......... If The Cowboys had won that game, that would have meant Green Bay would've come down to TX Stadium and you know they would've lost- If The Cowboys had won that Giants game in 07 this site wouldn't even exist right now.

2008 season : Tony Romo breaks his pinky, The Steelers got SOOOO lucky in that game, we outplayed and should've beat them. If Tony Romo had been in the lineup, the Rams would have NEVER touched us. There's more but I'm tired...

Bottom Line is : You're blaming Jerry for EVERYTHING and that's not smart. Was it Jerry Jones who gave up those 2 long embarassing runs against the Ravens this past season?? No. The ball just hasn't bounced the Cowboys way. If the Cowboys had closed the deal in 2007 like they should have........... You all wouldn't be saying none of this stuff. I say the Cowboys WILL go somewhere despite Jones.

But it's true and Reality has SUNK in....Your right Jerry shouldn't get 100% , but he is the one thats makes all the calls and who and what happens around the RANCH goes through his desk. I said what I felt as a fan, but I STILL LOVE THE BOYS.. Shit my job has season tickets for next season and im already on the list for a chance to go. I am more hyped one cause of the New Stadium and 2... knowing with all the LUCK like you said the other teams had I feel like this year the only luck will be the other team getting a wakening call cause DA BOY WILL BE BACK. Then at the same time as much as I want this I just hope Jerry would step down as GM and let a true GM help him bring AMERICA'S TEAM BACK TO OUR GLORY DAYS!!

You're right, JJ doesn't deserve 100% of the blame for the 07 and 08 seasons, those are just two years. But he does deserve the blame for the last 12, since he is the only person that was there in each of those years, not even Stephen Jones was there back then in any real capacity.

Jerry demonstrates an inability to put football matters ahead of the PR matters, and that has hurt this team over the years. It's helped to feed the addiction known as America's Team, but also has caused the media to just through hoops to spin a story.

Just saying, you can't absolve the only constant just because it's easier.

I will certainly agree with the fact that JJ puts PR matters ahead of Football matters. And I don't know about you guys but that new Reality show that Him and Michael Irvin are putting on is just plain stupid. I'm sure you guys have heard about it... where contestants compete for a roster spot on the Cowboys....come on. Just more of the same stupid stuff going on around Cowboy Nation. Believe me, I too am sick of losing and sick of that media circus too.

I'm mixed on that show, I'm for it simply because of the fact that Irvin has too much pride for this team to produce a shoddy player and that the Dallas Cowboys will actually have very little to do with the filming. For that matter, it may occupy JJ and keep out of the Ranch more, and the show will be completed before training camp starts.

Still makes me nervous though cause it's more media attention that would otherwise be some where else.

When assessing Jerry's tenure it is important to split the roles he has.

As an owner he can only be descibed as a success when he purchased the team they were in decline (it will be twenty years to the day on the 25th of this month by the way). Today the cowboys are the biggest franchise (value) in the NFL and second only to Manchester United worldwide. Most importantly perhaps is revenue generation at approx. $270 million per year.

As GM he needs to shoulder a great deal of the blame, not perhaps 100%, but much of it. Let us go back about a couple of years, The "team" that Parcells built (remember he never wanted TO and had Jerry listened TO would not have been signed) was in the playoffs and not for a fumbled field goal snap would have gone on to play a beatable Bears team. Parcells then "retires" and why?
TO or not everything was in place for the team to win at the highest level, all Jerry had to do was let Parcells move up to GM and promote form within - can anybody say Tony Sparano (although had this been the plan Sean Payton would probably had stayed as I believe Parcells wanted him to follow him in Dallas)
Parcells would have continued to evaluate talent and guide his coaches whilst a Coach like Sparano or Payton gets to run a talented team.
And does anyone think the discpline and team chemistry problems of the Wade Philips era would occur with Parcells as the GM, director of football operations or whatever title Jerry couldhave given him to save face.

Jerry's arrogance might cost us fans a dynasty that was being built by Parcells and his team, that now might happen in Miami instead.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Especially the role splitting thing.
